Conchomancy is the art of reading seashells. It’s ancient, simple and powerful. People have been working with shells in a sacred way for 50,000 years! Every shell has its story, its energy, its message. As shells are also homes to sea creatures, they carry that energy too.
Working with shells helps us connect directly to the deep depths of water energy and water spirits and reminds us of our deep love for beaches, the oceans and sea life.
Beaches are magical places indeed. It’s well documented that spending time at the beach is good for mind, body and soul. Just looking out upon the water has a very calming effect and can put us into the light meditative state of alpha very easily.
The negative ions in sea air accelerate our ability to absorb oxygen, and balance our seratonin levels, boosting mood and reducing stress. This seaside buzz is known as “thalassotherapy”, a term coined by Hippocrates.
If you’re heading to the beach this summer, go exploring for shells! Start by offering something to sea first. Picking up litter from a beach is a great act of service.
Find the shells that call out to you. Hold them gently with the intent to receive a message from the water spirits and see what message they have for you. Thank the shells for their beauty, their energy and return them to the beach. There’s no need to possess everything.
If you want to take a shell home with you, be sure to ‘ask’ permission. Use your intuition. If it feels like a ‘no’, keep looking.
If you’re landlocked, having a shell in your home and/or on your altar is a good way to be connected to water energy. Splash!
